Why traceability? Traceability is not about passing the blame to someone else. It is about finding the source and protecting the consumer. "It is necessary to have a comprehensive system of traceability within food and feed businesses so that targeted and accurate withdrawals can be undertaken or information given to consumers and officials... in the event of food safety problems." (EC 178/ recital 28) The tracing system adopted must be capable of effecting product withdrawals and recalls. These two actions, one when the product has left your control (withdrawal) and secondly, when it has reached the consumer (recall), must be implemented quickly. The conditions when these must occur and the actions you must take are revealed in the guide. Previous issues of our publications can be purchased separately at a cost of £3.00 each including post and packing. Buy the Guide. Do you need an internal traceability system and what is it? Traceability Every food business must have records, instantly available, of all goods coming in and going out. These include food, feed, food producing animals. The traceability regulations cover all undertakings whether for profit or not. The minimum requirements are that you have records of where you got your supplies and the businesses you supplied with goods. Records of sales direct to the consumer are not required. Previous issues of the Food Solutions publications have covered traceability in detail. Members can see these on the website. The Annual Guide gives the detailed rules for recalls and withdrawals and defines “unsafe” foods. The rules also apply to packaging materials.
